Art therapy at the Cedar centers gives young people the opportunity to express themselves through various visual arts techniques. Through drawing, creating souvenirs, photography, and even murals, they discover their own preferences, build confidence, and experience the satisfaction of creating something beautiful. Art therapist Desislava Anakieva works with attention to the individual characteristics of each participant and encourages free and creative expression. In this environment, art becomes not just an activity, but a means of communication, development, and mutual learning.
Painting “Mosaic” – author: Viki
The first artwork was created by Viki using the “mosaic” technique—an idea born during her work with our art therapist, Desislava Anakieva. For Viki, precise cutting along outlines is a challenge, but it was exactly this difficulty that inspired a new creative approach, where free forms are arranged into a colorful and harmonious composition. Thus, a challenge turned into an opportunity for expression, and Viki became the author of unique works filled with imagination and individuality.
Painting “Boat with Natural Materials”
Walks in nature are an important part of the weekly program for young people at the Cedar centers, and during the warmer months they become a source of inspiration. The natural materials collected during these outings often find their place in the artworks. This painting featuring a boat is a wonderful example—the wooden elements are woven into the composition, giving it a sense of movement, journey, and calmness. It is a small window into the world as the young people perceive it. The artwork was created by Angel, who attends Cedar’s counseling center and participates in individual art therapy.
Painting “Dots in the Colors of Nature”
This artwork is inspired by the beautiful landscapes near Kyustendil. Using a technique of numerous dots in a variety of colors, it recreates a sense of rhythm, light, and the breath of nature. Each dot is a small emotional stroke, and together they form a picture that reveals the richness of the surrounding environment in a playful, vibrant, and magical way. The painting was created by Stani, who lives in one of Cedar’s family homes and, in addition to painting, is also interested in creating tapestries.

About Cedar Foundation
„Cedar“ Foundation is a Bulgarian non-profit organization with a 20-year history that supports children and young people with disabilities, as well as children who, for serious reasons, cannot live with their families.
The foundation’s mission is to provide better care for children and adults in disadvantaged situations and to support their integration into the community, so they can lead fair, fulfilling, and dignified lives.
Currently, the foundation operates nine social service centers and provides care for more than 70 children and young people at risk. In addition to 24-hour care, it offers various therapies, educational support, and opportunities for social inclusion.
